The red fox is indigenous to Ireland and is its only member of the Canidae family. It is not considered to be endangered in Ireland and has basic legal protection under the Wildlife Act. It is highly adaptive and although traditionally associated with woodlands and open countryside, it can also be spotted in urban environments.
