The pine marten is a relative of the stoat, otter and badger. It is estimated that there are around 2,700 pine martens in the country making it Ireland’s rarest native mammal. It is currently protected under the Wildlife Act 1976, Annex V of the EU Habitats Directive 1992, Appendix III of the Bern Convention 1979 and the Wildlife (Amendment) Act 2000.
