Belfast Sculptures

A number of curious stone creatures and carvings can be found around the city of Belfast. Many are above street level and can be overlooked easily despite being in plain site. Inspired by a friend to ‘look up in Belfast’, the artist has sought out some of these fine carvings and has sketched them.

These stone artefacts tell the story of our local history and the character of a city separated by over a century. Belfast, like any other city, has a history that is expressed through its architecture and the earliest surviving buildings date back to the eighteenth century. The late Victorian period in Belfast was a time of great economic and social change and many of the cities landmark buildings are from this period. A wide variety of styles were popular during this time, including Gothic Revival, Baroque Revival, Neoclassicism, and Queen Anne Revival. Many of the interesting carvings were created during this period and into the early decades of the Twentieth century.
