The red squirrel is native to Ireland and is successful in all woodland habitats. The species faced near extinction in the seventeenth century due to deforestation and despite successful reintroduction it faces severe competition form the American grey squirrel and is endangered. It is currently protected in Ireland under the Wildlife Act (1976) and Wildlife (Amendment) Acts (2000 & 2010) and the Bern Convention (Appendix III).
